Senate President Hun Sen Reflects on Cambodia’s Development and ASEAN Integration

PHNOM PENH — In a recent lecture titled “Cambodia and ASEAN, ASEAN and the World,” Senate President Hun Sen shared insights into the nation's journey, emphasizing the significance of Cambodia’s past struggles and its future prospects within the ASEAN framework.

Addressing an audience of government officials and international observers, Senate President Hun Sen reflected on the challenges faced by Cambodia, describing them as valuable experiences that contribute to the nation's history and philosophical outlook. “In my life, the difficulties I have encountered and overcome have been valuable experiences, not only for myself but also for the history and philosophy of Cambodia,” he stated. “Cambodia has often been perceived as a country burdened with misfortune, suffering, and tragedy.”

However, the Senate President expressed pride in Cambodia’s recent progress under his leadership and the Cambodian People’s Party. He highlighted that the country is no longer considered impoverished and has garnered respect from the international community as an active participant in peacebuilding and regional cooperation. “International eyes are now looking at Cambodia with respect and appreciation,” he said.

A key part of his speech focused on Cambodia’s strategic decision to join ASEAN nearly three decades ago. Senate President Hun Sen underscored the importance of this move, describing it as a historic and diplomatic milestone that has positively impacted Cambodia’s political, economic, and cultural development.

He outlined four core reasons why Cambodia’s membership in ASEAN remains vital:

1. Principle of Non-Interference:Upholding respect for the internal affairs of member states to maintain regional stability.

2. Community Spirit: Fostering regional solidarity and cooperation.

3. Economic and Social Development: Promoting integration to enhance growth and development.

4. Diplomatic Opportunities: Serving as a gateway for Cambodia to expand its foreign relations and economic ties.

Senate President Hun Sen concluded by reaffirming that these principles continue to underpin Cambodia’s engagement with ASEAN and are essential to the country’s ongoing development.
